Local 78 Memorial Mass

Local 78 members gathered at St. Patrick's Cathedral on November 11, 2021 for its 13th annual Memorial Mass remembering those Local 78 members we have lost. Business Manager Pawel Gruchacz and Secretary Treasurer Joel Burgos memorialized those members who have passed by reading their names. Those who remain in the memory of the living never truly die.

Construction Laborer Apprentices Sought

The Local 78 Joint Apprenticeship Committee will conduct an area-wide public recruitment for 20 Skilled Construction Craft Laborer Apprentices. Applications will be available from March 1, 2022 through March 15, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at: Local 78 JATC 11-17 43rd Avenue Long Island City, NY 11101 Applications must be returned to the same office during the above business hours until 3:00 p.m. on March 25, 2022.  All applications must be obtained and submitted by the applicant in person.  The applications will be available until March 15, 2022 or until all applications have been distributed, whichever happens first.  Only 200 applications will be distributed, on a first-come basis.  Applicants must be: at least 18 years old;  able to pass the New York State and New York City Asbestos Handler test; a resident of one of the 5 boroughs of New York City or Long Island; and able to provide military transfer card or discharge CC-214, if applicable.  Applicants should note: the minimum education requirement is completion of the 8th grade or higher; however, a higher level of education will increase the applicant’s score and placement on the rank list. proof of education, if any, must be submitted at the time of the interview to be considered. Upon acceptance into the program, applicants must be able to: lift and carry an aggregated weight of 94 pounds for 30 feet;; restock to a height of approximately 54 inches off the ground; load ½ c/yards of material with a shovel into a wheelbarrow, wheeling it 30 feet and deposit into a container; and work at heights of 50 feet or greater, in confined spaces and in extreme temperatures. End of Year Updates

Dear Brothers and Sisters: As this year comes to a close and we look forward to the coming year, it is our sincere hope that you and your family are safe and healthy and enjoying the holiday season. We wanted to take this opportunity to report to you on some decisions, and actions your Executive Board, and trustees have taken that will be of interest to you. DUES Last year at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the monthly dues for apprentices were reduced to $20 per month. The Executive Board has acted to keep the monthly dues for apprentices at $20 for 2022. At the end of this year the monthly dues for members were scheduled to increase $2.00 per month, from $38 per month to $40. The Executive Board has asked the International Union for a variance to allow for a $1.00 increase, raising the monthly dues to only $39 for 2022. LEGAL SERVICES The Board of Trustees of the Local 78 Legal Services Plan have announced that effective January 1, 2022 the plan has been modified as it relates to immigration and naturalization services. The eligible member, the member's spouse and the member's child will now be eligible for this service. The number of hours covered under the plan for this service will also increase from 8 hours to 25 hours per year. Further details of this new and expanded benefit will be provided to you from the Trustees in the coming weeks. LOCAL 78 CHARITABLE CORP. This past year Local 78 established a new charitable foundation to benefit the members of the Local. This New York non-profit corporation was established to benefit the members of Local 78. It is up and running and in the coming year we are committed to expanding the charity and continuing [...]

Legal Services Plan Modifications

General. This is a Summary of Material Modifications regarding the Local 78 Legal Services Plan Summary Plan Description (the "SPD"). This Summary of Material Modifications supplements the SPD previously provided to you. You should retain this document with your copy of the SPD. Summary Description of Modification. The Board of Trustees of the Local 78 Legal Services Plan announces the following change to the Plan, effective January 1, 2022. 1. The spouse and children of an Eligible Member will be eligible for immigration and naturalization services. 2. The total number of hours for immigration and naturalization services for an Eligible Member will increase from 8 to 25 total hours per year. The 25 hour total will be applied to any open immigration matter or matters on behalf of (1) the Eligible Member, (2) the Eligible Member's spouse, (3) the Eligible Member's child -or a combination thereof -but in no way will the total hours covered under the Plan for an Eligible Member, across all open immigration and naturalization matters, exceed 25 total hours in a year.
